This is exciting news indeed! As you may remember from our previous post we have applied for a Global Village build trip to Ghana. This trip will involve us volunteering to help build several houses in cooperation with Habitat for Humanity Ghana. There are a number of local affilliates in Ghana and we will be thrilled to help any one of them offer safe, decent, affordable housing for families in need. We are both so excited to visit Africa, especially after hearing all about the trip and Rick and Suzanne's (the team leaders) past experiences in Africa.
We filled out the application one evening the third week of June and then heard back about 5 days later about setting up an interview. On Thursday of this week we did the interview with Rick and Suzanne over the phone and we felt it went pretty well. They spent a lot of time explaining what the trip would be like as well as the culture of the area in Ghana around the capital Accra (pronounced a-craw as we learned Wednesday) which is where we will likely be building.
The site has not been chosen yet but we will likely be building in a Habitat for Humanity Village where there will be a larger number of Habitat homes and families in one development. As Rick and Suzanne described, this can be a very beneficial situation and means the community rallies around its international volunteers to ensure they feel safe, welcome and, most importantly in African culture, happy!
We will be on the Global Village trip from November 24 - December 9 and will spend the first weekend travelling from Accra to our build community. We will then spend the next week building. This will involve our team of 20 or so working on several different homes which will likely be constructed with concrete floors and hand made bricks. During the week we will also visit a local school or orphanage and we are already planning to collect some supplies to take with us. Over the first weekend in the village we will visit some other community services which may include a local clinic as well as some site seeing and hopefully some soccer playing with some of the children. We will also attend church on Sunday - Rick told us the services tend to be lively and full of music which Bruce and I are really looking forward to experiencing. During the early part of the next week we will continue to build and will then prepare for our departure for some R&R activities on the coast. Our departure will likely be marked with a big celebration which will be one of the most amazing parts of the trip I'm sure!
Well, those are the basic details for now - we wanted to share the exciting news with everyone and put you on high alert for our fundraising activities over the next 4+ months. Trip expenses which are tax receiptable include the program fee (which includes a donation to Habitat Ghana) and airfare. For the two of us, we think this will amount to between $7,500-$8,000. This will be a lot of fundraising and we may have to pay a portion ourselves, but I am confident we can raise the majority, and of course I am really looking forward to the challenge and also the opportunity to host some community fundraisers to help raise awareness about the Global Village program and Habitat for Humanity around the world.

Well we're off to do some weekend chores before we head out for an afternoon of soccer at the FIFA Under 20 Men's World Cup here in Victoria - we watched the games Wednesday night and are back for more today to watch Uruguay vs. Zambia & Japan vs. Nigeria - we'll be back again Wednesday night for some round 2 action!
